Radio Overview in Europe (Ep. 1): Norway

This is new series Radio Overview in Europe. The series which will be discussed about given country. Will be described radio stations, how to receive these stations etc. Now let's go to the point.
Now of course, will be Norway.

Facts about Norway

  1. The official long name of the state is the Kingdom of Norway (Kongeriket Norge {Norwegian Bokmål}, Kongeriket Noreg {Norwegian Nynorsk}, Norgga gonagasriika {Northern Sami}).
  2. The official short name of the state is Norway (Norge {Bokmål}, Noreg {Nynorsk} and Norga {Sami}).
  3. Norway is bordered by three countries such as: Finland (709 km / 441 miles), Russia (191 km / 119 miles) and Sweden (1,666 km / 1,035 miles). The length of the land border is 2,566 km / 1 594 miles. The length of the coastline (including fjords and coastal islands) is 25,148 km / 15,626 miles (mainland - 2,650 km / 1,647 miles; fjords and coastal islands - 22,498 km / 13,980 miles). Length of island coastlines is 58,133 km / 36,122 miles.
  4. The total area of this state is 323,802 square km / 125,021 square miles, of which the land area is 304,282 square km / 117,484 square miles and water area is 19,520 square km / 7,537 square miles.
  5. Extreme elevations. The lowest point is Norwegian Sea at 0 m / 0 yd. The highest point is Galdhopiggen at 2,469 m / 2,700 yd.
  6. The population of this country is 5,320,045 (July 2017 est.).
  7. Poles are the largest national minority group.
  8. The official languages are Norwegian Bokmål, Norwegian Nynorsk and Sami (in 9 municipalities)
  9. Capital of this state is Oslo. It's also the largest city in Norway.
  10. Constitution of Norway was adopted on 17 May 1814 (more under) then many times amended and is the longest-standing constitution in Europe.
  11. The first-level administrative division in Norway is county (singular: fylke; plural: fylker {Bokmål} or fylke {Nynorsk}) and contain 19 counties which will be replaced by 11 regions (singular: region; plural: regioner) from 2020. County is divided into municipality (singular: kommune; plural: kommuner) with 428 municipalities which will be reduced to 358 from 2020.
  12. Government type is parliamentary constitutional monarchy.
  13. The head of state is King Harald V (since 17 January 1991) and is hereditary.
  14. The head of government is the Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H; since 16 October 2013) and appointed by the monarch with the approval of the parliament to serve 4-year term.
  15. Parliament is unicameral. It's called as Storting with 169 members. These members are elected through an open-list proportional representation system to serve 4-year term. There are 19 multi-member districts corresponding to mentioned above counties. Seats are allocated by the modified Sainte-Laguë method.
  16. Parliamentary election recently held on 11 September 2017 and in this parliament there are parties such as Labour Party (Arbeiderpartiet), Conservative Party (Høyre / Høgre, which means as Right), Progress Party (Fremskrittspartiet / Framstegspartiet), Centre Party (Senterpartiet), Socialist Left Party (Sosialistisk Venstreparti), Liberal Party (Venstre, which means as Left), Christian Democratic Party (Kristelig Folkeparti / Kristeleg Folkeparti), Green Party (Miljøpartiet De Grønne / Miljøpartiet Dei Grøne, which means as "The Environment Party The Greens") and Red Party (Rødt / Raudt).
  17. Norway is derived from the Old Norse words "nordr" and "vegr" meaning "northern way" as refers to the long coastline of western Norway.
  18. Norway gave independence from Sweden on 7 June 1905.
  19. National holiday is Constitiution Day on 17 May which commemorate signing by the Constituent Assembly in 1814.
  20. National anthem is "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" ("Yes, we love this country") as de facto.
  21. The number of mobile phones in Norway is 5,718,740 giving 107%.
  22. Radio in Norway was introduced in 1925 as Kringkastningselskapet but in 1933 has been incorporated into newly estabilished NRK.
  23. Is also the first country to shut-down analogue FM radio in favor for DAB. Began on 11 January 2017 and will finish on 13 December 2017.
  24. Television in Norway was introduced in 1954 but regular broadcasting began on 20 August 1960.
  25. Colour television was introduced in 1972 with regular programming in 1975.
  26. Digital terrestrial television with DVB-T standard began their services on 1 September 2007.
  27. Analogue terrestrial television in Norway was switched-off on 1 December 2009.
  28. Internet domain is .no.
  29. Norway has 4,250 km / 2,640 miles of railways.
  30. Norway has 93,870 km / 58,328 miles of roadways, including 393 km / 244 miles of expressways. With paved roads has 75,754 km / 47,071 miles.
  31. Norway has right-hand traffic.
  32. Calling code is + 47.
  33. The time zone is Central European Time (UTC + 01:00 with DST + 1 hour).
  34. The currency of Norway is krone.
  35. The most popular summer sport disciplines are association football (or soccer) and handball. By contrast, the most popular winter sport disciplines are nordic skiing, biathlon and ice hockey.
  36. Norway boycotted 1980 Summer Olympics to protest (along with the United States and their allies) against Soviet invastion in Afganistan.
  37. Norway twice hosted Winter Olympics. It was first held in 1952 in Oslo and second held in 1994 in Lillehammer.

NRK (state-owned/public)

NRK P1

NRK P1 (until 1st September 1984 named just as NRK) is the most popular and general radio station, and 1.5 million people listen every day. 15 regional offices (Buskerud, Finnmark, Hedmark og Oppland, Hordaland, Møre og Romsdal, Nordland, Oslo og Akershus, Rogaland, Sogn of Fjordane, Sørlandet, Telemark, Troms, Trøndelag, Vestfold, Østfold) produce opt-out morning (from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM) and afternoon programming (from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM) with regional news and services. Every day at 5:45 AM local time on this station weather forecast aimed mainly for fishermen. In addition to these also offers music, debates, nationwide news etc. Began broadcasting on 1st July 1933 (Saturday). It's currently broadcast on AM 153 kHz longwave (for fishermen working in Barents Sea), nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted on analogue AM (almost all except below) and FM (over 1170 transmitters/relays) on 87.6-103.6 MHz range.

NRK P2

NRK P2 is a radio station for in-depth analysis. Every day deliver news, debate, culture, science and social affairs. Also jazz, classic and folk music are broadcasted. Began broadcasting on 1st September 1984 (Saturday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted on analogue FM (over 600 transmitters/relays, inc. NRK Sami) on 87.8-101.8 MHz range.

NRK P3

NRK P3 is an entertainment angaging music radio station aimed for young people. The music profile is emphasizes mainly new Norwegian music. Began broadcasting on 2nd October 1993 (Saturday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted on analogue FM (over 150 transmitters/relays) on 87.7-103.1 MHz range.

NRK mP3

NRK mP3 is a teenage radio station. Every morning programming is hosted by Martin Holmen, every afternoon is afternoon show with guests, competitions and news. On this station, music 24 hours per day. Began broadcasting on 31st July 2000 (Monday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted also on analogue FM (13 low-power transmitters) mainly in cities on 90.8-97.2 MHz range.

NRK Alltid Nyheter

NRK Alltid Nyheter is a news radio station. No music, only words. Not only from NRK contents, but also from Swedish Radio and BBC World Service in late evening and nightly. Began broadcasting on 14th April 1997 (Friday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted also on FM (14 low-power transmitters) mainly in cities on 88.4-97.0 MHz range.

NRK P1+

NRK P1+ is a radio station aimed mainly to mature and elder audience. Began broadcasting on 2nd October 2013 (Wednesday) in place of NRK Gull. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

NRK P13

NRK P13 is music and entertainment radio station containing mainly rock and indie music. Began broadcasting on 28th January 2014 (Tuesday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

NRK Radio Super

NRK Radio Super is Norway's only children radio station with music, stories, listening games and good Q&A. On DAB+ is broadcasted between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM and share with NRK Folkemusikk but on the Internet is broadcasted continously 24 hours per day. Began broadcasting on 12th October 2006 (Thursday).

NRK Sport

NRK Sport is a sport radio station. Men's football Eliteserien, Norway national football team matches, FIFA World Cup, winter sports and that's all. Began broadcasting on 2nd July 2007 (Monday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

NRK Folkemusikk

NRK Folkemusikk is a radio station with Norwegian folk music both old and new. On DAB+ is broadcasted between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM and share with NRK Radio Super but on the Internet is broadcasted continously 24 hours per day. Began broadcasting on 7th December 2004 (Tuesday).

NRK Klassisk

NRK Klassisk is radio station with classic music only 24 hours per day. Began broadcasting on 1st June 1995 (Thursday) as world's first digital-only radio station. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted for many years until 1st July 2009 also on analogue FM band.

NRK Jazz

NRK Jazz is a jazz radio station. Began broadcasting on 2nd July 2007 (Monday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

NRK Sápmi

NRK Sápmi is Sami-langugae radio station aimed mainly for Sami population with office in Karasjok. Began broadcasting on 8th November 1946 (Friday) as an opt-out programming on national NRK service for northern Norway then in 1999 as a radio station on DAB. Formerly broadcasted on FM as share-broadcasting with NRK P2 in northern Norway and in Oslo (over 60 transmitters/relays). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

NRK Vær

NRK Vær is a weather radio service for those who are at sea. In cooperation with Meteorologisk Institutt and yr.no, this station broadcast continous weather report in three versions: South, West and North exclusively on DAB+ but not on Internet, and is avalaible also on satellite as NRK Været til sjøs. Began broadcasting on 2nd May 2007 (Wednesday) as NRK Batvær.

NRK Trafikk

NRK Trafikk is a radio station that contains current traffic reports for the region in which listener is located. Began broadcasting on 11th January 2017 (Wednesday) exclusively on DAB+ as part of start of the digital switchover.

Commercial broadcasters

P4

P4 is the most listened and largest commercial network radio station. On this station there are pop music with news, entertainment and sport. Began broadcasting on 15th September 1993 (Wednesday) but in 2004 swapped FM frequencies into FM5 with Kanal 4 (later Kanal 24, and finally as Radio Norge). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted on analogue FM (over 150 transmitters/relays) on 87.6-107.8 MHz range.

P5 Hits

P5 Hits is a big city radio station for hits in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger and Østfoldbyene. Biggest hits and updates on traffic, weather and news. On DAB national block 1 is broadcasted as nationwide mutation and on some local DAB+ with opt-outs but also on some local analogue FM radio in some cities.

P6 Rock

P6 Rock is a national radio station with own morning show, news every hour, traffic announcements and rock music. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

P7 Klem

P7 Klem is an easy listening radio station with big hits and quiet favorites. Also provides news every hour. During Christmas this station play Christmas music with many hits such as "Last Christmas" by "Wham!" of deceased George Michael or "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online. Formerly broadcasted on analogoue FM radio in Oslo on 100.7 MHz.

P8 Pop

P8 Pop is a pop music radio station for 80s music lovers. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

P9 Retro

P9 Retro is a radio station with the best music from 60s and 70s. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

P10 Country

P10 Country is a country music radio station aimed to this music lovers. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

NRJ

NRJ is a youth radio station with mix of music and DJs, inc. techno and club music. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

Radio Norge

Radio Norge is the country's 2nd commercial network radio station. Plays music from last 4 decades. Broadcasts also news and intervention magazine. Began broadcasting on 1 January 2004 (Thursday) as Kanal 4, later renamed to Kanal 24, then relaunched on 21 April 2008 (Monday). It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

Radio Rock

Radio Rock is a rock music radio station. Nationally is broadcasted all-digital but also broadcasted on FM frequencies in major cities.

P24/7 MIX

P24/7 MIX (formerly Radio Soft) is a radio station that plays versatile music mix and around the clock also latest news and traffic. Formerly broadcasted nice, calm and comfortable music . It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

KISS

KISS is a dance and big club radio station aimed to young people. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

Radio Norsk Pop

Radio Norsk Pop is a radio station with best Norwegian hits to listen. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

Radio Vinyl

Radio Vinyl is a retro radio station with music from 50s, 60s and 70s. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

Radio Topp 40

Radio Topp 40 is a contemporary hit radio station. It's currently on nationwide DAB+ and worldwide online.

Radio 1

Radio 1 is a cult commercial radio station. Formerly broadcasted on analogue FM and currently broadcasts on DAB+. Returned to broadcasting on 1st January 2018 (Monday).

Juleradioen

Juleradioen is Christmas radio station that is broadcasted on DAB+ and online for the Christmas time from November to January. It's competitor for MTG's P7 Klem.
