Radio Overview in Europe (Ep. 5): Denmark

Previously on the Radio Overview in Europe, I focused on the United Kingdom. In this episode, another monarchy, of course, about Denmark.

Facts about Denmark

  1. The official long name of the state is the Kingdom of Denmark (Kongeriget Danmark {Danish}).
  2. The official short name of the state is Denmark (Danmark {Danish}).
  3. Denmark is bordered only by Germany. The length of the land border is 140 km / 87 miles. The length of the coastline is 7,314 km / 4,545 miles.
  4. The total area of the state is 43,094 square km / 16,639 square miles, of which the land area is 42,434 square km / 16,384 square miles and water area is 660 square km / 255 square miles.
  5. Extreme elevations. The lowest point is Lammefjord at -7 m / -8 yd. The highest point is Mollehoj/Ejer Bavnehoj at 171 m / 187 yd.
  6. The population of the country is 5,605,948 (July 2017 est.).
  7. The official language is Danish.
  8. Capital of this state is Copenhagen (København {Danish}).
  9. Constitution of Denmark was adopted in current format in 1953 which replaced previous Constituion in 1849.
  10. Denmark joined to the European Economic Community (now European Union) in 1973.
  11. The first-level administrative division in Denmark is region (plural: regiorner) and contain 5 regions. Regions is divided into 98 municipalities (singular: kommune; plural: kommuner).
  12. Government type is parliamentary constituional monarchy.
  13. The head of state is Queen Margrethe II (since 14 January 1972) and is hereditary.
  14. The head of government is Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Venstre, since 28 June 2015) and is appointed by the monarch to serve up to 4 years.
  15. Parliament is unicameral. It's called as Folketing with 179 members, which 135 members are elected by open list proportional representation by using d'Hondt method in 10 multi-member constituencies, 40 by open list proportional representation in multi-member constituencies by Sainte-Lague method, these from Denmark and 4 by open list proportional representation, of which 2 each from Greenland and the Faroe Islands, these to serve 4-year term.

Parliamentary election recently held on 18 June 2015 and in Folketing from Denmark only are Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet, A), Danish People's Party (Dansk Folkeparti, C), Venstre, Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten, Ø), Liberal Alliance (I), The Alternative (Alternativet, Å), Social Liberal Party (Radikale Venstre, B), Socialist People's Party (Socialistisk Folkeparti, F) & Conservatie People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti, C).
  17. Denmark is derived from the words "Dane" and "mark" which refers to a march or forest.
  18. Denmark has been created by baptism in 965 by Harald I Bluetooth.
  19. National holiday is on 5 June which commemorate adoption of the Danish Constitution in 1849 and in 1953.
  20. National anthems are "King Christian stood by the lofty mast" ("Kong Christian stod ved højen mast") as royal and "There is a lovely country" ("Der er et yndigt land") as alternative.
  21. The number of mobile phones in Denmark is 6,985,035 giving 125%.
  22. Radio in Denmark was introduced in 1925 with creation of Radioordingen which renamed next year to Statsradiofonien and to Danmarks Rado (DR) as current name in 1959.
  23. Digital radio switchover in Denmark will be occured no later than in 2021 or earlier within 2 years if digital radio listenership reach 50%.
  24. Television in Denmark was introduced on 2 October 1951.
  25. Colour television in Denmark was introduced in February 1968 for the Winter Olympics in Grenoble with regular broadcasting on 1 April 1970 but until 1978 national newscast TV-avisen broadcasted on black-and-white.
  26. Digital terrestrial television in Denmark began broadcasting in 2006.
  27. Analogue terrestrial television in Denmark was switched-off on the night from 31 October to 1 November 2009.
  28. The internet domain is .dk.
  29. Denmark has 3,476 km / 2,160 miles of railways.
  30. Denmark has 74,558 km / 46,328 miles of roadways. All of these are paved.
  31. Denmark has right-handed traffic.
  32. Calling code is + 45.
  33. The time zone is Central European Time (UTC + 01:00 with DST + 1 hour).
  34. The currency of Denmark is krone.
  35. The most popular summer sport disciplines are association football, handball and cycling. By contrast, the most popular winter sport discipline is ice hockey.

DR

DR P1

DR P1 is a speech radio station of DR that broadcasts mainly news, debates, education and social programming. It's broadcast nationwide on analogue FM radio on 88.1-96.2 MHz range as shared radio station with DR P2 at daytime from 6:00 AM local time on weekdays, 8:00 AM on Saturdays and 9:54 AM on Sundays to 6:00 PM since 1 November 2011 (Tuesday) and on digital DAB+ as 24-hour radio station on 3 MFN regional DR ensembles blocks 11C/220.352 MHz (North-East / Funen, Lolland, Falster, Zeland & Bornholm), 13B/232.496 MHz (North Jutland) and 8B/197.648 MHz (South Jutland). Began broadcasting in 1925 as Radioordingen, soon changed to Statsradiofonien, then in 1951 to Program 1, in 1959 to Danmarks Radio Program 1, later in 1971 to Danmarks Radio P1 and finally in 1996 to DR P1. Formerly broadcasted on long- and mediumwave.

DR P2

DR P2 is a cultural radio station of DR that broadcasts mainly classical music, literature and radio dramas. It's broadcast nationwide on analogue FM radio on 88.1-96.2 MHz range as shared with DR P1 at nighttime from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM local time on weekdays, 8:00 AM on Saturdays and 9:54 AM on Sundays since 1 November 2011 (Tuesday) and on digital DAB+ as 24-hour radio station on on 3 MFN regional DR ensembles. Began broadcasting in 1951 as Program 2, then in 1959 to Danmarks Radio Program 2, later in 1971 to Danmarks Radio P2, in 1996 to DR P2, then on 1 November 2011 to DR P2 Klassisk and finally returned to DR P2 in 2013.

DR P3

DR P3 is a radio station of DR that broadcasts popular music, entertainment and also sports broadcasting. It's broadcast nationwide on analogue FM radio on 88.4-99.6 MHz range and also on digital DAB+ on MFN ensembles. Began broadcasting on 1 January 1963 (Tuesday) as response to the outlawed pirate radio station Radio Mercur and was named as Musikradioen which in April 1966 became Danmarks Radio Program 3, then in 1971 renamed to Danmarks Radio P3 and finally in 1996 to DR P3.

DR P4

DR P4 is a network of 10 regional radio stations of DR that broadcast mixture of popular music, national and regional news, and also traffic announcements. It's the most listened radio station in Denmark. It's divided into Bornholm, Esbjerg, Fyn, København, Midt og Vest, Nordjylland, Sjælland, Syd, Trekanten and Østjylland. It's avalaible on analogue FM radio on 88.9-103.7 MHz range and also on digital DAB+ on DR ensembles for the North East (Bornholm, Fyn, Køenhavn, Sjælland and Syd), North (Midt og Vest, Nordjylland & Østjylland) & South Jutland (Esbjerg, Midt og Vest, Syd, Trekanten and Østjylland). Began broadcasting in April 1960 as regional programming on Danmarks Radio Program 2 and relaunched as DR P4 on 1 September 2001 (Saturday) because regional programmings on P2 has been ceased.

DR P5

DR P5 is a digital-only radio station of DR that broadcast programming aimed to Danish seniors over the age of 60. It's avalaible on digital DAB+ on DR MFN ensembles. Began broadcasting in 2003 as DR P4 Danmark and was rebranded on 2 November 2009 (Monday) to DR P5.

DR P6 Beat

DR P6 Beat is a digital-only radio station that broadcasts mainly alternative music. It's avalaible on digital DAB+ on DR MFN ensembles. Began broadcasting on 11 April 2011 (Monday).

DR P7 Mix

DR P7 Mix is a digital-only radio station that broadcasts mainly pop and soft music. It's avalaible on digital DAB+ on DR MFN ensembles. Began broadcasting on 6 June 2011 (Monday).

DR P8 Jazz

DR P8 Jazz is a digital-only jazz radio station. It's avalaible on digital DAB+ on DR MFN ensembles. Began broadcasting on 12 September 2011 (Monday).

DR Langbølge

DR Langbølge is a radio station of DR that broadcasts 4 times daily at 5:45 AM [20 min], 8:00 AM [65 min], 11:45 AM and 4:45 PM (winter) or 5:45 PM (summer) [both 30 minutes]. It's avalaible only on 243 kHz on longwave also on DRM mode.

Commercial/Private

Ekstra Bladet Radio

Ekstra Bladet Radio is a digital-only radio station that broadcast mainly music of Danish artists as well as news from Ekstra Bladet. It's avalaible on the nationwide SFN digital DAB+ ensemble called as DK DAB1 on 12C/227.360 MHz. Began broadcasting terrestrially on 1 October 2017 as part of DAB switchover in Denmark.

myRock

myRock is a rock music radio station which is owned by Bauer Media Denmark. It's avalaible on analogue FM radio on 89.7-107.0 MHz as well as on digital DAB+ on DK DAB1 ensemble.

Nova

Nova is one of the most popular commercial radio station that broadcasts mainly Adult Contemporary music and it's owned by Bauer Media Denmark. It's avalaible on analogue FM radio on 87.9-107.5 MHz range as well as on nationwide digital DAB+ on DK DAB1 ensemble and also in Bornholm. Began broadcasting in 2008.

Pop FM

Pop FM is a pop music radio station which is owned by Bauer Media Denmark. It's avalaible locally on analogue FM radio on 88.7-106.9 MHz range and also nationwide on digital DAB+ on DK DAB1 ensemble and also in Bornholm.

Radio 100

Radio 100 is a radio station owned by Bauer Media Denmark that broadcasts mainly popular music. It's avalaible on analogue FM radio on 89.7-107.7 MHz range and on digital DAB+ on DK DAB1 ensemble.

Radio24syv

Radio24syv is an independent private talk radio station that funded by licence fee only without ads and sponsorships, and also broadcasts in English between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM. It's avalaible on analogue FM radio on 97.3-103.5 MHz range and on digital DAB+ on DR MFN ensembles. Began broadcasting on 1 November 2011 (Tuesday) on former DR P2 analogue FM radio frequencies.

Radio Klassisk

Radio Klassisk is a classical music radio station. It's avalaible at least on digital DAB+ on DK DAB1 ensemble.

Radio Soft

Radio Soft is a soft music radio station owned by Bauer Media Denmark. It's avalaible on analogue FM radio on 87.6-107.8 MHz range and on digital DAB+ on DK DAB1 ensemble and also in Bornholm on MUX3-SYDSJ-BORN ensemble.

The Voice

The Voice is a CHR radio station owned by Bauer Media Denmark. It's avalaible on FM radio on 88.2-107.9 MHz range and on digital DAB+ on DK DAB1 ensemble.
