Radio Overview in Europe (Ep. 3): Liechtenstein

Previously as announced on the episode about Switzerland. This time will talk about Liechtenstein.

Facts about Liechtenstein

  1. The official long name is the Principality of Liechtenstein (Fürstentum Liechtenstein {German}).
  2. The official short name is Liechtenstein.
  3. Liechtenstein is bordered by 2 countries such as: Switzerland (41 km / 26 miles) and Austria (34 km / 21 miles). The length of the land border is 75 km / 47 miles. It's landlocked state.
  4. The total area of the state is 160 square km / 62 square miles, all of them is land area.
  5. Extreme elevations. The lowest point is Rugeller Riet at 430 m / 470 yd. The highest point is Vorder-Grauspitz at 2,599 m / 2,842 yd.
  6. The population of the country is 38,244 (July 2017 est.).
  7. The official language is German.
  8. Capital of this state is Vaduz. The largest municipality is Schaan.
  9. Constitution of Liechtenstein was adopted on 5 October 1921.
  10. The first-level administrative division of Liechtenstein is commune (singular: Gemeinde; plural: Gemeinden) and contain 11 communes.
  11. Government type is constitutional monarchy.
  12. The head of state is Prince Hans-Adam II (since 13 November 1989) and is hereditary.
  13. The head of government is Adrian Hasler (FBP, since 27 March 2013) and is appointed by monarch.
  14. Parliament is unicameral. It's called as Landtag with 25 members. These members are elected in 2 constituencies which contain 15 from Oberland (Gemeinden: Balzers, Planken, Schaan, Triesen, Triesenberg, Vaduz) and 10 from Unterland (Gemeinden: Eschen, Gamprin, Mauren, Ruggell, Schellenberg) through an open-list proportional representation system to serve 4-year term.
  15. Parliament elections recently held on 5 February 2017 and in the parlament there are parties such as Progressive Citizens' Party (Fortschrittliche BürgerPartei), Patriotic Union (Vaterländische Union), The Independents (Die Unabhängigen) and Free List (Freie List).
  16. Liechtenstein is derived from the name after the Liechtenstein dynasty that purchased and united the counties of Schellenberg and Vaduz and that was allowed by the Holy Roman Empire in 1719 to rename the new property after the family; the name in German means "light (bright) stone".
  17. Liechtenstein was founded as mentioned above, then received independence by Treaty of Pressburg (now Bratislava) on 12 July 1806 and separated from German Confederation in 1866.
  18. National holiday is on 15 August.
  19. National anthem is "High on the Young Rhine" ("Oben am jungen Rhein" {German}).
  20. The number of mobile phones in Liechtenstein is 43,914 giving 116%.
  21. Radio in Liechtenstein was introduced in 1938, before that they received radio stations from neighbouring countries. In this state there is also transmiiter which broadcast Swiss radio stations plus national Radio L.
  22. Television in Liechtenstein was introduced in 2008 with the launch of 1FLTV, before this date Liechtensteiners received TV stations from Austria and Switzerland.

  24. Liechtenstein has 9 km / 6 miles of railways which connects between Austria and Switzerland.
  25. Liechtenstein has 380 km / 236 miles of roadways. All of these are paved.
  26. Liechtenstein has right-handed traffic.

  28. The time zone is Central European Time (UTC + 01:00 with DST + 1 hour).
  29. The currency of Liechtenstein is Swiss franc (translations are mentioned in previous episode).
  30. The most popular sport disciplines are football and alpine skiing.
  31. Liechtenstein football clubs are participating in Swiss league system but organise their national cup.
  32. Liechtenstein is the only national Olympic team to win medals in the Winter Olympics but not in the Summer Olympics.

Radio Liechtenstein

Radio Liechtenstein (or Radio L) is only Liechtenstein radio station that has headquarter in Triesen. RDS-PS is [RADIO_L_]. It's broadcast on analogue FM radio on 88.8-106.1 MHz range and also on digital DAB+ on SMC D03 O-CH ensemble via block 9B (204.640 MHz). There is list of analogue FM radio frequency.
