Radio Overview in Europe - SUPPLEMENT (Ep. 4, part 1) [Isle of Man]

On part 1 of Episode 4 supplement will be focused on the facts about the Isle of Man.

Facts about the Isle of Man

  1. The official name of the dependent of the United Kingdom is the Isle of Man (Manx: Ellan Vannin) or simply Mann (Manx: Mannin).
  2. Isle of Man doesn't border with any states. The length of coastline is 160 km / 100 miles.
  3. The total area of the island is 572 square km / 221 square miles.
  4. Extreme elevations. The lowest point is Irish Sea at 0 m / 0 yd. The highest point is Snaefell at 621 m / 679 yd.
  5. The population of the island is 88,815 (July 2017 est.).
  6. The official languages are English (official) & Manx (for historical & heritage purposes).
  7. Capital of this island is Douglas.
  8. The first-level & the only administrative division in the Isle of Man is the local authorities.
  9. Government type is the parliamentary democratic constitutional monarchy.
  10. The head of state is the Lord of Mann Elizabeth II (since 6 February 1952) as mentioned in the United Kingdom episode which is represented by the Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney (since 27 May 2016).
  11. The heaf of government is the Chief Minister Howard Quayle (since 4 October 2016) and is elected indirectly by the Tynwald to serve 5-year term and can be eligible for the 2nd term
  12. Parliament is bicameral and is named as Tynwald (Manx: Tinvaal). Lower house is named as House of Keys (Manx: Yn Kiare as Feed) with 24 members which are elected directly by majority vote from 12 MNTV double-member constituencies. Upper house is named as Legislative Council (ManxYn Choonceil Slattyssagh) with 11 members including 8 members that are appointed by House of Keys.
  13. Parliamentary election recently held on 22 September 2016.
  14. The name Man is derived from the Celtic word meaning as "mountain".
  15. Territory of Man has been estabilished in 1755.
  16. National holiday is on 5 July as Tynwald Day.
  17. The national anthem is O Land of Our Birth (O Halloo Nyn Ghooie {Manx}).

  19. Isle of Man has 63 km / 39 miles of railways.
  20. Isle of Man has 500 km / 311 miles of roadways.
  21. Isle of Man has left-handed traffic.

  23. The time zone is West European Time (UTC = 00:00 with DST + 1 hour).
  24. The currency of the Isle of Man are pound sterling & Manx pound.
